What is an RFID label?

An RFID label (also called an RFID tag, RFID sticker, or RFID transponder label) is a self-adhesive data carrier that combines an RFID chip and an antenna in a thin sticker. The chip stores a unique ID or additional data, which an RFID reader retrieves wirelessly via radio waves. Passive RFID labels do not require their own battery.

How do RFID labels work?
The reader emits a radio signal that is picked up by the RFID label's antenna. The induced energy powers the chip, which then sends back its stored data. Depending on the frequency (125 kHz, 13.56 MHz, or UHF 860–960 MHz), range and data transfer speed vary. UHF RFID labels achieve a read range of several meters and allow numerous labels to be read simultaneously.
What are the disadvantages of RFID stickers?
RFID stickers on metal surfaces can be difficult to read without a special anti-metal design, as metal shields the radio signal. Liquids also dampen the HF signal. Inexpensive standard RFID labels without encryption can in principle be cloned. For applications with high security requirements, encrypted chip technologies such as MIFARE DESFire are recommended. In addition, RFID-based collection of personal data is subject to the GDPR.
How much do RFID labels cost?
The price of RFID labels depends heavily on chip technology, material, quantity, and printing. Standard RFID paper labels (UHF) start at just a few cents per piece for larger quantities. Can RFID labels be written to?
Yes, depending on the chip technology, RFID labels can be written to once (WORM – Write Once Read Many) or repeatedly (Read/Write). RFID labels with NFC chips (NDEF format) can conveniently be rewritten using a smartphone or a special RFID writer. Industrial UHF RFID labels are typically encoded once with a unique EPC number.
Which RFID labels are suitable for metal?
Specially developed anti-metal RFID labels are required for metal surfaces. These feature a decoupling layer (e.g. foam or ferrite) that decouples the radio signal from the metal surface and ensures reliable readability.
